Kitselas Lands
With Treaty, Kitselas will own over 95,000 acres of Treaty Settlement Lands (TSL) and on the Effective Date will have legal authority to manage TSL- from environmental stewardship to economic opportunities, from sustainable harvesting to business projects, from people to parks.
Below, learn more about key Implementation questions and deliverables with respect to TSL and engagement opportunities for Kitselas Citizens.
Key Implementation Questions
- Who should own TSL land, and how should ownership rules vary?
- What is the process for land allocation (long-term leases, replacement CPs/CoAs)?
- How will Kitselas establish, manage, and enforce laws on TSL?
- What changes will occur in consultation and shared decision-making within the Kitselas Harvest Area?
Key Implementation Deliverables
- Developing a comprehensive land management framework for approximately 95,000 acres of Treaty Settlement Lands (TSL), including:
- land ownership and leasing processes,
- land development regulations (zoning laws, infrastructure needs), and
- robust land management protocols (new bylaws, permits, environmental protection strategies, emergency preparedness).
- Establishing a TSL (property) taxation model.
- Replacement Statutory Right of Ways (SRW) and process for new SRWs.
Community Engagement Opportunities
There will be opportunities for community input in deciding on land management options, ongoing community input on land-use plans, and community understanding of ongoing discussions on “overlap” protocols and negotiations.
